I just realized that I didn't claim my medical expenses on my prior year tax return. I'm getting ready to file for the current year and I'm wondering if I can report those expenses now?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

Unfortunately, you cannot report medical expense paid in the prior year as an itemized deduction on your current year tax return. However, you can file an amended Form 1040X to claim the expense on your prior year tax return. Please note though that you can only deduct medical expenses if you itemize your deductions on Schedule A. In addition, you can only deduct the portion of the expenses that exceeds 10% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) or 7.5% of your AGI if you're 65 or older. Please also note that you can only claim medical expenses that are not reimbursed by your insurance provider.
