I am filing my 2011 tax return along with my 2012 return this year. I will be filing jointly for 2012, but will be forced to file married filing seperately for 2011 since my husband already filed for that year (we were living in different countries). I have interest paid on a student loan for the year of 2011 that I would like to claim. Will I be able to claim the student loan interest even though I will be filing separately?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

Unfortunately, if you are filing as married filing separately, you cannot claim the student loan interest deduction.
