I sold stock options to a company as part of a takeover. I did not "exercise" the options. No stock was owned or sold by me in this transaction. I owned the options for over 5 years. Are the gains on the sale treated as short or long term capital gains?

ANSWER

Expert Charles Markham's Answer:

The stock options that you sold are long term capital gains.

The options themselves are the property were sold.
