If a student receives Form 1098-T with $1300 in Box 2 and $3450 in box 5 (Scholarships), and their parents are claiming them as a dependent, is the Form 1098-T included on the child's tax return or the parent’s tax return?

ANSWER

The BIDaWIZ Team's Answer:

It would be included on the student's tax return since the scholarship exceeds the tuition expenses in box 2.

If there is either not an amount in Box 5 or the amount in Box 5 is less than box 2, the parents would be able to claim the tuition expenses granted that they are paying for the tuition expenses associated in box 2.
